![]() The devices covered under this category are incomplete in certain constructional features or restricted in performance capabilities and are intended for use as components of complete equipment submitted for investigation rather than for direct separate installation in the field. THE FINAL ACCEPTANCE OF THE COMPONENT IS DEPENDENT UPON ITS INSTALLATION AND USE IN COMPLETE EQUIPMENT SUBMITTED TO UL. GENERAL This category covers single- and multi-pole connectors intended for factory assembly to copper conductors or printed wiring boards for use in data, signal, control and power applications within and between electrical equipment. These connectors may employ crimp terminals, solder terminals, quick-connect terminals, insulation displacement or insulation-piercing terminals, pressure terminal connectors, wire-binding screws, or other terminals that are intended for factory wiring. PRODUCT MARKINGS AND RATINGS Reusability — These devices have not been investigated for reusability. Current Interruption — Unless otherwise noted in the individual Recognitions, these devices have not been investigated for current interruption (making or breaking a mated connection under load), nor for connection to branch-circuit receptacle outlets. A device intended exclusively for disconnecting use is marked "Not for Current Interrupting" or "For Disconnecting Use Only," or with an equivalent statement. Electrical Rating — The devices covered under this category are generally marked with assigned ratings up to 1000 A and up to 600 V ac or dc. Devices with assigned electrical ratings have been investigated for their current-carrying capability under conditions representing the manufacturer's intended use with operating temperatures not exceeding the connector's insulating material or terminated conductors. (Also see Condition of Acceptability #1 below for devices without an assigned current rating.) Flammability — Devices marked with a flammability class have demonstrated compliance with the applicable flame class as described in ANSI/UL 94, "Tests for Flammability of Plastic Materials for Parts in Devices and Appliances." Type 0 devices (rated less than 8.3 A and less than 30 V rms [42 V peak]) have not been investigated for a Flammability rating. Small components with an overall volume of less than 2500 mm3 (0.15 in.3) may be classed as SC-0, SC-1 or SC-2 as described in ANSI/UL 1694, "Tests for Flammability of Small Polymeric Component Materials." Direct-contact Applications — Devices that have insulating materials that have been evaluated for CTI, HAI, HWI, Mechanical RTI, and other properties commonly applied in end-product investigations will include this information under "Conditions of Acceptability" in the individual connector Report. Acceptance for use in a product where such properties are required by the end-use product standard (such as applications where the material is in direct contact with live parts) are determined during the end-product investigation. Maximum Operating Temperature — The insulating materials used in devices have been investigated for a maximum operating temperature (MOT). The MOT may be assigned up to the Electrical RTI of the polymeric material. Mating Connectors — Connectors of Types 1A, 1B, 2, 3, 4 or 5 are intended for use with a mating connector from the same manufacturer. Intermixing of connectors from different manufacturers is permitted when a suitable investigation is conducted and this provision is noted as a Condition of Acceptability in the Report available from the manufacturer. Contacts and Housing — Contacts and housings may be packaged and sold separately. Compliance has been investigated on the same manufacturer's complete assembly of the contacts and housings, with the investigated combination detailed in the manufacturer's Report. Intermixing of contacts and housings from different manufacturers is permitted when a suitable investigation is conducted and this provision is noted as a Condition of Acceptability in the Report available from the manufacturer. CONDITIONS OF ACCEPTABILITY Consideration is to be given to the following Conditions of Acceptability when these components are employed in the end-use equipment: 1. Devices without a current rating have not been investigated for current-carrying capability and shall be investigated in the end-use product. 2. The suitability of the mounting means shall be determined in the end-use product. 3. Unless otherwise noted in the individual Recognitions, these devices have not been investigated for use in equipment grounding applications. 4. The maximum operating temperature for any connector shall not exceed the rated operating temperature as noted in the individual Recognitions. Additional Conditions of Acceptability may be included in the Report available from the manufacturer. REQUIREMENTS The basic standard used to investigate products in this category is UL 1977, "Component Connectors for Use in Data, Signal, Control and Power Applications." 1 Scope 1.1 These requirements cover single and multipole connectors, intended for factory assembly to copper or copper alloy conductors or printed wiring boards, for use in data, signal, control and power applications within and between electrical equipment. 1.2 These requirements apply to devices categorized as follows (See Figure 1.1): a) Type 0 rated less than 8.3 A and less than 30 V rms (42 V peak); b) Type 1A rated less than 8.3 A and from 30 V up to and including 600 V ac or dc, or both; c) Type 1B rated from 8.3 A up to and including 200 A, and less than 30 V rms (42 V peak); d) Type 2 rated from 8.3 A to less than 31 A and from 30 V up to and including 600 V ac or dc or both; e) Type 3 rated from 31 A up to and including 200 A and from 30 V up to and including 600 V ac or dc, or both. f) Type 4 rated from greater than 200 A up to and including 1000 A, and up to and including 600 V ac or dc. g) Type 5 rated less than 31 A and from 601 V up to and including 6000 V ac or dc, or both. Type designations used in this Standard only serve as a guide to determine appropriate requirements, and do not represent an assigned rating. A device without an assigned current rating is considered to be either a Type 0 or Type 1A depending upon the assigned voltage rating. 1.2 Figure 1.1Connector type designations 1.3 This standard does not directly apply to the following devices, but may be used to supplement the requirements within these standards when a device is evaluated to these standards: a) Devices produced integrally with flexible cord or cable that are covered by the Standard for Cord Sets and Power-Supply Cords, UL 817; b) Devices intended for connection to the branch circuit, such as attachment plugs, cord connectors, receptacles, inlets, and outlets, that are covered by the Standard for Attachment Plugs and Receptacles, UL 498; c) Devices solely intended for direct connection to the branch circuit in accordance with the National Electrical Code, NFPA 70, and that are provided with contacts of the pin and sleeve type, that are covered by the Standard for Plugs, Receptacles, and Cable Connectors of the Pin and Sleeve Type, UL 1682; d) Devices consisting of wiring terminals and supporting blocks intended for the connection of wiring that are covered by the Standard for Terminal Blocks, UL 1059; e) Devices intended for use with telecommunications networks, that are covered by the Standard for Information Technology Equipment – Safety – Part 1: General Requirements, UL 60950-1, or the Standard for Communications Circuit Accessories, UL 1863; f) Devices such as wire connectors and soldering lugs that are covered by the Standards for Wire Connectors, UL 486A-486B; Splicing Wire Connectors, UL 486C; or Equipment Wiring Terminals for Use with Aluminum and/or Copper Conductors, UL 486E; g) Devices such as quick-connect terminals that are covered by the Standard for Electrical Quick-Connect Terminals, UL 310. 1.4 The requirements in this standard may not entirely address all possible situations due to the wide variety of products and designs. In those situations, the Standard for Attachment Plugs and Receptacles, UL 498 may be used to supplement the requirements in this standard. Where a conflict exists between the requirements of UL 498 and UL 1977, the requirements of UL 1977 shall take precedence.
