The news came shortly before the release of the latest iPhone sales figures, which show that Apple has lost its fourth position in the Chinese market. Given that China accounts for around one quarter of Apple's profits, this is serious news for the US tech giant. This is the sixth consecutive financial quarter in which Chinese iPhone sales have declined for Apple. These figures help to explain our report from last month that Apple is concentrating its resources on opening more stores in China, instead of Europe. The company has apparently set a store limit of 20 in most European countries, concentrated on major urban centers. In the United Kingdom, there are currently just under 40 stores, with 20 in France and fewer in Germany, Italy and Spain. In China, the US tech giant already has 40 stores. In March, we reported that Apple had announced plans to build a further two research and development centers in China, bringing the total number to four. The move was seen by analysts as an attempt by the firm to reverse poor performances in the local market. The new hubs will be built in Shanghai and Suzhou, complimenting those already in place in Beijing and Shenzhen. Apple have certainly moved very quickly - with plans for the initial R and D facility in China revealed by sino.uk as recently as September last year. |
