在工業(yè)生產(chǎn)中，隨著生產(chǎn)規(guī)模的擴大和復(fù)雜程度的提高，實際應(yīng)用對控制系統(tǒng)的要求越來越高。在20世紀50～60年代，以模擬信號為主的電子裝置和自動化儀表組成的監(jiān)控系統(tǒng)取代傳統(tǒng)的機電控制系統(tǒng)。隨后是在70～80年代，集散控制系統(tǒng)dcs(DistributedControlSystem)的出現(xiàn)，把大量分散的單回路測控系統(tǒng)通過計算機進行集中統(tǒng)一管理，用各種I/O功能模塊代替控制室儀表，利用計算機實現(xiàn)回路調(diào)節(jié)、工況聯(lián)鎖、參數(shù)顯示、數(shù)據(jù)存儲等多種功能，從而實現(xiàn)了工業(yè)控制技術(shù)的飛躍。
DCS一般由操作站級、過程控制級和現(xiàn)場儀表組成，其特點是“集中管理，分散控制”，基本控制功能在過程控制級中，工作站級的主要作用是監(jiān)督管理。分散控制使得系統(tǒng)由于某個局部的不可靠而造成對整個系統(tǒng)的損害降到較低的程度，且各種軟硬件技術(shù)不斷走向成熟，極大地提高了整個系統(tǒng)的可靠性，因而迅速成為工業(yè)控制系統(tǒng)的主流。但DCS的結(jié)構(gòu)是多級主從關(guān)系，底層相互間進行信息傳遞必須經(jīng)過主機，從而造成主機負荷過重，效率低下，并且主機一旦發(fā)生故障，整個系統(tǒng)就會“癱瘓”。而且DCS是一種數(shù)字—模擬混合系統(tǒng)，現(xiàn)場儀表仍然使用傳統(tǒng)的4～20mA模擬信號，工程與管理成本高，柔性差。此外各制造商的DCS自成標準，通訊協(xié)議封閉，極大的制約了系統(tǒng)的集成與應(yīng)用。
